Planning a show

Before the first spark: preparing for a safe display

The care behind a fireworks display begins on the ground: equipment, clear boundaries and time to prepare.

The audience sees the colours, the shapes and the rhythm. Behind that view are decisions made long before the fireworks begin: where to work, how to protect people and what to prepare while it is still light.

This guide covers preparations for consumer fireworks. It is a starting point, to be read alongside each product’s instructions and the rules that apply at your location.

Dress for the work

At our professional shows, we use protective equipment. If you are handling consumer fireworks, prepare your equipment before you prepare the firing area:

  • Safety goggles. A helmet or face shield does not replace them.
  • Hearing protection and a helmet.
  • Suitable clothing that does not readily catch fire, such as cotton or flame-resistant clothing.
  • Protective gloves that cover your fingers, and sturdy footwear. Do not cut the gloves.
  • A head torch, so you can see what you are doing and keep your hands free.

Use the daylight

Mark the firing positions and the limits of the firing area before darkness falls. Make it clear where the audience can stand and how you will prevent anyone from entering the area during the display.

Keep fireworks protected from moisture and prepare them as directed by the manufacturer. Take the time to read the instructions while you can see clearly.

Check the base of every firework

A firework tipping over can change the direction of its effects. Place each product upright on a firm, level base and secure it exactly as the manufacturer specifies. This matters particularly for firework batteries.

Do not tape separate fireworks together, modify them or improvise fixings.

Leave yourself time and room to move

Follow the product’s lighting instructions. Never lean over a firework or put any part of your body above it, and move back to the required safety distance immediately after lighting. Keep the space above the product clear.

The running order must allow you to remain outside active safety zones. A pause in the display is preferable to rushing.

Keep your attention on the display

Remain completely sober during preparation and firing. When you are responsible for the fireworks, your attention belongs to the work and to the people around you.
